4.7 Biphasic model
The biphasic model accounts for the liquid and solid composition of the
cytoplasm by treating it as a combination of a linear-elastic solid phase
and an inviscid uid phase. In this model, the liquid phase is able to dif-
fuse through the solid phase. Momentum exchange occurs through friction
between the two phases. In the general de nition of a biphasic model, the
solid phase is treated as a linear-elastic material, while the uid phase is
assumed to be inviscid:
