Power in Exchange Networks

Abstract

Power is another social force in networks covered in this chapter. Exchange networks are prominently addressed in this chapter. Most interactions are uneven in value gained by one node or the other. This inequality produces power and dependence as its complement in dyadic relationships. In a network with many dyadic relationships, differential powers produce interesting power landscapes. One form of this power can mirror network locations that yield structural power, which is an open research area in sociology.
