Barrett and Barrett (1982) have presented evidence that the
internodal axolemma and its strongly rectifying channels contribute
to post-spike changes in membrane potential and excitability,
and a role for these channels in determining resting potential is
argued by many authors (Rithchie and Chiu 1981, Chiu and Ritchie
1984). Baker et al. (1987) apply long-duration (100 ms) current
stimuli to intact rat spinal roots treated with tetrodotoxin to block
sodium currents, and they recorded fast (rise time < 1 ms) and
slow (10–100 ms) components of the non-propagated changes in
membrane potential (electrotonus), as fi rst described by Lorente
