4D CAD

6.1 An introduction to 4D CAD

DEFINITION

2D, 3D CAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM) have been discussed in the previous chapters. This chapter concentrates at 4D CAD, which is sometimes referred to as 4D modelling. 4D CAD is a 3D model, or more specifically a 3D BIM model linked to the time dimension via a construction activity schedule. It enables the visualisation of the progression of the construction activities.

In a construction project, a 4D CAD simulates the process of transforming space over time and reflects the four-dimensional nature of construction activities.
