Virtual Private Networks

With the incredible advance of the Internet, it has become more and more popular to set up virtual private networks (VPNs) within organizations. VPNs have been around for many years and have branched out into more and more varieties. (See Figure 30.1 for a high-level view of a VPN.) Once only the largest of organizations would utilize VPN technology to connect multiple networks over the Internet “public networks,” but now VPNs are being used by many small businesses as a way to allow remote users access to their business networks from home or while traveling.
