Thinking about the hardware: an overview of relevant technologies

It goes without saying that between writing this chapter and you reading it much of the software will have gone on to a new release, faster computers will be cheaper and someone will have marketed a tool that we have not even thought of. Therefore this chapter focuses on generic issues with only occasional mention of specifics.
