Data Layout Technologies

We begin with an outline of the tools and technologies available to the end user for effective data layout. In doing so, we cover the major levels of RAID, including striping, mirroring and RAID 5, write caches, and the storage alternatives for database files (file systems and raw devices).

We describe the technology rather than provide recommendations. The following section, “Data Layout Strategies” on page 242,” looks in detail at the performance implications of the various alternatives and offers recommendations.
