High Availability
An organization’s high availability strategy is a unique expression of its needs and expectations and will not necessarily be similar to that of other organizations. Some general principles apply, though.
Planning for disk high availability is planning for disk failure. And disk failure is inevitable.
It’s all a matter of statistics. I remember one of my undergraduate professors telling us he refused to fly Qantas. His reason: Qantas had (and still has) a safety record second to none, being the longest operating airline never to have never suffered a jetliner crash. He argued that one day statistics would strike back and wipe out the entire Qantas fleet at the same time!
