Human beings are creatures of habit. And yet the chaos of entrepreneurship can throw even the most vital habits off kilter. At times when the chaos was most intense, I would run into the house at the end of a day, head straight for the bathroom, and then go to the kitchen to grab a quick snack. I would hurriedly say to Charisse, “I was so busy today I didn't have time to eat or even go to the bathroom,” almost as if it were a badge of honor. And she would say something like, “Wow! Sounds like you're out of balance.”
She was right. (By the way, Charisse is always right in her observations of my life as an entrepreneur.) I've seen a version of this over and over with entrepreneurs. The demands of the business are so great, the opportunities so exciting, and the fires so constant, that even if you have a good Life Vision in place, the chaos of the business can take control and knock you out of balance. Before you know it, you're busy, but you aren't achieving your goals and dreams.
To make matters more challenging, many entrepreneurs have at least a little ADHD or anxiety, as mentioned previously, making us very susceptible to “shiny objects,” high stress, and any number of distractions that can knock us off our Vision.
