In this chapter, we will focus on the elements of the culture that we call cultural practices—the “what we do around here” that reflects on our culture. For example, a cultural practice at Whole Foods Market is the biannual vote on the benefits program. Given the empowerment and transparency in the organization, team members get to select which benefits they value and how much they are willing to pay for them. Rather than making a top-down decision, the leaders ask team members what they most value—and then respond with those benefits that are most popular.
