Conscious Cultures

A company’s culture can be a severe constraint on its success or a source of strength and sustained competitive advantage. As with so much else in life and business, it takes conscious intent and effort to create and maintain a vibrant, positive culture. As James Heskett of Harvard Business School says, “A strong culture can help or hurt performance. Culture can account for up to half of the difference in operating profit between two organizations in the same business. Shaping a culture is one of a leader’s most important jobs; it can be ignored, but only for so long and at one’s peril.”1
