In the 19th century, the study of consciousness and the relation between conscious and unconscious processes was considered central to the fledgling disciplines of neurology, psychology and psychiatry (Ellenberger, 1970), yet for much of the 20th century it has been deliberately marginalized for what many people still consider to be good reasons. One therefore approaches the issues involved with considerable trepidation, but there can be no doubting that they have resurfaced during the last 25 years, and especially in neuropsychology.
