Concern about humankind’s impact on the planet leads to consideration of the sustainable sourcing of materials, as well as the amount of energy required to make and transport a material and the pollution consequent on its manufacture.

Sustainability and economic concerns favor recycling of materials. Responses to these concerns in construction suggest the following courses of action:

  • use resources efficiently and economically; e.g. do not waste materials—for example: recycle any waste used in manufacturing; recycle materials already on site; specify paving stones of a range of sizes, so as to avoid wastage; source naturally occurring boulders from construction sites where they will be disturbed anyway, rather than from the wild; ...
