A note on standards

This is not a book about construction specification—it is an introductory text—and though we quote from some standards and refer to building codes we trust that it is understandable without a detailed knowledge of the subject. It is meant to be an introductory text. However, given that we refer to ANSI, ASTM, and so forth, we should explain what they mean so that readers can develop a knowledge of building specification.
