Earth, turf, and non-conventional materials

Low-technology techniques are seen in traditional structures using soil and sod. They are not widely used much in many developed countries, largely because they have been forgotten (many rural cottages were built of sod until the nineteenth century, but have since disappeared). However, historic building conservation and the rise of interest in "low-tech" or alternative technology has done much to promote some of these techniques. Such structures are low in their use of embodied energy.
