Strength classes

Strength classifications are based on compressive strength (pounds per square in) at 28 days of age. Requirements for design strength are specified in ACI 318. Common strengths are 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500. Classes can vary according to State DOTs guidelines.

Concrete may be site-mixed (most simply using a bucket and spade) or mixed off site in a concrete plant and delivered ready-mixed. Components can also be precast, meaning made and formed in a factory, or cast in situ. The material may be laid as mass concrete, without reinforcement, or be reinforced, most usually with steel rods or mesh.
