DRYSTONE WALL TYPES
This sequence of images shows a range of drystone walls in different countries. Common to them all is that the building material was sourced from nearby. Agricultural stone walls are built using stones from the fields they enclose, while more formal walls may be built with stone from local quarries (for example, a quarry would be excavated to build a farmhouse in a nearby field). They are therefore low in embodied energy and sustainable, as well as offering a habitat for flora and fauna.
