Design of paving
Paving design can be a delight, and need not involve expensive materials: simple concrete slabs can be transformed by leaving wide (2–3 in) grass-filled joints, or by filling wide-jointed concrete slab layouts with slates on edge.
It is far better to concentrate expensive effects near entrances, or in special areas and along main axes, and then provide extensive areas of cheaper gravel or asphalt with good edging or drainage channels. Take care with edgings and joints. Boring vehicle forecourts can be transformed by simply dividing them and providing pattern and scale using standard precast concrete channels.
