CHAPTER 3The consultation in a nutshell

As we begin to go into the detail of how to conduct a successful general practice consultation, take a moment to remember the essential simplicity of what you are trying to achieve. The patient comes to you with a problem and expects to leave with a plan for dealing with it. So your tasks are, first, to find out what the problem is – the real problem, the one you really need to concentrate on – and then to agree on a course of action that satisfies both of you (Figure 3.1).
