… let me tell you the story of a young man who, as a boy, had a wonderful family doctor. Everyone agreed; they all said, ‘She’s a wonderful doctor.’ You felt better just for seeing her, for knowing you were in her care.
In due course, the young man applied to medical school. He got all the right A-levels, played the clarinet and did the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and told the selectors how he loved science but wanted to work with people. ‘Just the sort of person we’re looking for,’ said the selectors. But really what drove him on was to be, in his turn, a wonderful doctor.
