5.3.2 risks anD concerns
5.3.2.1 Animal By-Products
Animal by-products are entire bodies or parts of animals, products of animal
origin, or other products obtained from animals that are not intended for human
consumption. Food wastes containing animal by-products may pose a higher risk
during treatment or disposal due to the potential for these materials to introduce
pathogens into the end product. In the EU, the Animal By-Products Regulations
(European Union, 2009) set the conditions that must be met in order for the material
to pose a minimal risk when used, treated, or disposed. The regulations do not allow
catering wastes to be fed to animals.
