12.1. The scientific operating mode: a principle which is inseparable from reality

There is recurrent confusion between science and mathematics, and yet, although the proximity of use is “indisputable”, the operating principle presents a gap in practice that leaves, in our opinion, little doubt as to their functional “autonomy”. The father of Multiple Intelligences, Howard Gardner, says on this subject: “There can be no doubt that science and mathematics are closely linked. There is no particular historical period in which the progress of science – or even its invention – can be separated from the status of mathematics, and almost any significant mathematical invention has ultimately proved useful to the scientific community as a whole” [GAR 97, p. 154]. The assessment of hundreds of entrepreneurs and researchers provided us with evidence, not in terms of differences but in terms of gaps between the two.
