Struggling to Do It All
Twins bathed, fed, and asleep—check. Urgent work emails dealt with—check. Bag packed for tomorrow’s work trip—check. Hannah collapsed onto the sofa after another long day, finally able to catch her breath. Santiago joined her a few moments later, and Hannah took his hand, happy they’d finally have a few moments together. But when he avoided her eyes, she realized that something was wrong.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing,” Santiago replied. But he continued to look away, and suddenly Hannah realized that his eyes were welling with tears.
“What is it?” she asked again, this time with alarm.
“I’m sorry,” Santiago said, his voice breaking. “It’s just that I’ve realized—we’re never going to live in Portugal, are we?” ...
