9Narrate Your Story
In 2014, I had the opportunity to deliver my first TED Talk at TEDx Kennesaw State University entitled “The Power of Story.” A quick internet search will bring it right up if you want to check it out. I stepped onto the stage, stood in the center of that famous red dot, and told the story about my career pivot and transition into entrepreneurship for the first time.
I didn't quite know it at the time, but my story became the blueprint for the work I do today. Personally navigating some of the steps in the ASCEND practice when I was lost and seeking career (and life) clarity – then standing on that stage – was a full circle moment. Connecting with our own stories and becoming the hero in our own storyline, I believe, becomes the map to fulfilling our life's purpose and mission. It was and continues to be true for me. My story all culminated in the ASCEND practice, became the catalyst for stepping into entrepreneurship, and now this book. I didn't know that while going through it in real time, but I'm glad I didn't quit. What was a pivotal moment for me – using my voice to tell my story on such a grand stage – gave birth to this next piece of the practice, the power and importance of narrating your own story.
As women, it is critical that we find our voice and tell our own story, right down to our career. If you don't tell the story of who you are, someone else will make assumptions and tell a story for you. And we know there are FAR too many false narratives ...
