Urinary tract infection

An infection of the urinary tract commonly caused by E. coli bacteria.

Classic Signs

–Dysuria. Related to infection.

–Low back pain. Related to infection.

–Feeling of fullness in suprapubic area. Related to infection.

–Urinary frequency. Related to infection.

–Urinary urgency. Related to infection.

–Increase leukocytes (WBC) in urine. Related to infection.

Interventions

–Increase fluid intake. Flushes infection.

–Monitor vital signs. Identify changes in patient status.

–Monitor fluid intake and output. Identify if patient is retaining fluid.

–Administer as ordered:

○Analgesics. Decreases pain.

▪Phenazopyridine. Local analgesic. Turns urine orange.

○Antibiotics. Decreases bacterial infection.
