Freeware is software that is free of charge but cannot be modified. It is different than free software, which is proprietary software available to the public, but the free software’s copyright determines how it is able to be modified and redistributed. If you can program, the best software to use will be free software without copyright available to the public. In this chapter, the software focus is primarily freeware.

Freeware that is popular often becomes open-source software (software with a source code that can be modified), but the freeware that has been referenced in the previous chapters is software that is copyrighted and cannot be modified or distributed. Usually this is perfect for faculty members creating curriculum.
