The following terms are used in this book as they have been defined in this Glossary.

asynchronous replication

A process whereby an application is acknowledged when data are written to the local storage and replication happens independently. Synchronous replication requires higher bandwidth and usually allows for less distance between sites than does asynchronous replication.

availability

The percentage of time that a system (or product) is available to perform its functions correctly. Note that the correct operation of a system (product) can be related to the acceptable level of service provided by that system (product).
