II.4. Excuse Number Three: I Don't Have an Education

I hear this excuse a lot from young people, but it applies to all ages: "I'm not educated enough to start and run a business." I believe education is meant to broaden your horizons, open up new worlds and new understandings about the world and the people in it. The primary purpose of higher education is not to equip you to make a million dollars. Get an education, but separate the notion that your education is going to make you successful. It will enrich your life, but success is up to you.

There are literally hundreds of millionaires in the business world, myself included, who either never set foot in a college classroom or dropped out after realizing that college wasn't going to take them where they wanted to go.

• Ever hear of a man named Ray Kroc? He was the founder and CEO of one of the largest restaurant chains in the world, McDonalds. Even though he founded "Hamburger University," he never spent a day in college.

• You've probably never heard of Kemmons Wilson but you have definitely heard of Holiday Inns. Mr. Wilson was the founder of Holiday Inns and, by the time he sold out, probably a billionaire; yet, he didn't even graduate from high school.

• Here's another brand name you'll recognize: Coca Cola. Did you know the man who headed the world's most famous soft drink company in the 1900s, Charles E. Culpepper, never attended a university?
