8.3. Installation Requirements and Prerequisites

Prior to installing WSUS, you'll need to ensure that you've got a few things set up in your environment. WSUS 3.0 SP1 will install onto Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 but is not supported on Windows 2000 Server. A WSUS instance for Windows Server 2003 works much like a client/server application. The server components install to the server and run there, while the client components can be run either on the server or on your management workstation. To simplify our environment, in most of our examples we'll run the client components from \\wsus, which is our example WSUS server.
