Apply Color Intuitively With a Paper Towel

I’ve been a watercolorist for most of my painting career, but lately I’ve been experimenting with acrylics and gouache, and the results are pretty exciting! Photorealism is never my goal, as I no longer work from photographs, which is very freeing. I may have a general concept in mind, as I do for this painting, but I don’t have a firm preconceived plan—I let the color guide me.

I never know exactly what the painting is going to be when I start. My goal in each painting is the use of light and color to project a powerful mood. I think of color combinations first, squeeze the paint out onto the canvas panel and go from there.
