For a landscape painter, there’s no better way to alter your comfort zone than to haul your gear outside on a cold winter night, stand in the snow and paint a nocturne. If that doesn’t shake you out of your rut, I don’t know what will. Once out there, everything calms down, the sounds of life are muffled by the blanket of soft snow, and without a wind and with a bright moon, it’s always a paradise waiting to be put down on canvas. The difficulties, beyond staying warm and not losing your supplies in the depth of the dark and the snow, begin with being able to see your painting surface, paints and the subject matter that you’re painting.
