Like most artists, I tend toward a specific color palette, and even though I like to paint intuitively rather than from photographic reference, I probably pick up the same colors again and again.
To get out of this routine, I decided to pick some different color combinations and see what happened. I envisioned a sunset and added two new colors—Luminous Rose and Opera—to my palette, as I wanted the sunset to be really glowing at the horizon line.
Exploring the interaction between colors is a never-ending process and can do wonders for getting you out of a rut.
STEP 1 Work From the Bottom Up
