Create a New Painting Surface

One way to stay productive in spite of the occasional mental block is to make new painting surfaces for pastels. I usually work on manufactured sanded paper, but I find that these surfaces can be limiting. I love the look and feel of pastels but sometimes wish I had the luxury of putting down a nice, thick, juicy stroke, like you can with oil paint. I have long admired the work of pastelists whose pastel paintings have that look to them. The key is often the surface they are painting on.
