Sometimes when I have nothing specific in mind and I’m waiting for a spark of inspiration, I start looking at photo images from my files. Often one particular element of a photo can be a springboard for an entire painting.

Such was the case with the photograph of an old, weathered sea veteran. The fact that it wasn’t a high-quality photo was unimportant, and in fact, the low resolution allowed me all kinds of creative latitude. I knew I could paint a portrait of the boat replete with the weathered textures and all the character of its years of service.
