The artist’s block isn’t always connected to difficulty in getting started or finding a subject. Sometimes it’s the habit of staying in a routine, painting the same way all the time. And sometimes it’s a matter of overworking the subject because you can’t seem to quit when you should.

I developed this exercise when I found myself overpainting some of my flower still lifes and thus losing the freshness and spontaneity of my strokes. I use this exercise both in practice and as a warm-up on serious painting days. It’s also useful in experimenting with unusual color combinations before committing them to large-scale painting projects.
