Paint Vegetables!

When stymied by the question of what to paint, the answer may be as close as the local farmers’ market, grocery store or your own backyard garden. Vegetables, with their wide array of colors, textures and shapes, make for great subject matter. Especially if you normally paint landscapes or figures, this change in subject may be just what you need to get going again.

When selecting vegetables, think about how the various shapes and colors will work together. Do the colors complement each other? Are textures repeated in some of the vegetables? Does the grouping have varying sizes to create interest?

Rather than working from the standard still-life set-up on a table, I like to arrange everything on a neutral-colored piece of cloth ...
