A large number of people spend over 20 per cent of their lives in education, generally between the ages of about 5 and 21 – although children in some countries start earlier, and college or university can last longer than three years. And this period is just to get a Bachelors degree. For those interested in an academic career, obtaining a Masters can take another couple of years and a research doctorate up to another eight years depending on the specialisation. So in the latter case, formal education continues into your fourth decade.

In addition, many businesses provide courses for employee training, some mandatory and some optional, that help lead to promotion.
