CHAPTER 7Assemblies

7.1 Introduction

Assembly of mechanical components is a capstone process in design and manufacturing. It brings together all previous chapters. However, in the industry, assemblies combine design, manufacturing, logistics, and communication to ensure the final product functions accurately. In this chapter, we will be developing some new parts to assemble them together; however, it is not likely that you will be developing from scratch in the industry. Often times, you update one or two components of a larger assembly, i.e. fender and its fastening components of a tractor without making changes to the rest of the tractor’s parts. In this case, the assembly process requires the design engineer to open the larger assembly to visualize how the newly developed fender and its component fit or what design changes should the larger scale assembly requires to incorporate the new prototype.
