Chapter 37. M

Mail Control Panel

On the Macintosh: Internet Control Panel

In Windows, the Mail control panel lets you create and edit different accounts, or profiles, for Windows Messaging (known as Microsoft Exchange in the first version of Windows 95). These accounts make it easy for several people to use Windows Messaging on the same computer. Profiles also simplify the process of switching between modem and network access, and they let you separate different mail services.

On the Macintosh (and in Windows 98), such multiple-user features are generally built right into the email programs themselves. You may prefer, however, the Internet control panel provided with Mac OS 8.5 later. It lets you create and switch between sets of Internet preferences, including email preferences (see Figure 37-1).

To create a second set of Internet settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open Apple menu → Control Panels → Internet.

  2. Choose File → New Set (Command-N).

  3. Name the set.

  4. Click each tab—especially Personal and E-mail—and fill in the appropriate settings.

Once you’ve created multiple sets, you can switch between them with these steps:

  1. Open Apple menu → Control Panels → Internet.

  2. From the Active Set menu, choose the desired set.

  3. Close the Internet control panel.

All of this assumes, of course, that you check your email using an email program capable of recognizing the Internet control ...
