When you develop the discipline to examine possible ability barriers, you substantially increase your potential for effective influence.

Let’s turn now to source 2, personal ability. As we move to the right side of the model, we don’t just add another source of influence—we challenge our default way of understanding and influencing behavior. Our natural tendency is to attribute most negative behavior to motivation problems and almost never consider whether ability is playing a role. If you want to influence change, it’s best to do the opposite: consider ability problems first, motivation second.
