Chapter 2 reviews the science of the fouling process. The basic fouling mechanisms—crystallization, particulate, chemical reaction, corrosion, and biological fouling—are described with particular focus on the mechanisms underlying crude oil fouling: chemical reaction and corrosion fouling.
