There are so many people who have contributed to this book, many directly and many indirectly. Because my career spans over 30 years, countless people have influenced my life and shaped my perspective.

To my dad, Pete Peterson, I feel very privileged to have grown up in a baseball family and on a baseball field. My dad gave me a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform to wear when I was two years old and I haven’t taken a uniform off since! His excellent leadership qualities as a player, scout, manager, and general manager for the Pirates and New York Yankees deeply influenced my understanding of the game and how it is played. His loving guidance helped shape my life.
