Lore
Artists sometimes have a tendency to neglect their health. We can
become so absorbed in our work that we neglect our bodies. I have
seen artists who live in studios without sufficient heat, or who feed
themselves with coffee and cigarettes. This sounds terribly cliché,
and is by no means universal. Yet some people who thrive on self-
expression also harbor unnecessarily romantic ideas about artistic
self-sacrifice. Or they may simply lack the cash flow to properly
take care of themselves. But when a life is lived in balance and good
health, creativity and success will more easily to follow.

Wellness and healing start with Mother Nature. Plant remedies for focus, longevity, and inspira-
tion have existed for thousands of years in many cultures. They have been passed on by word of
mouth, by written text, and through rituals.
The plant nettle, popularly known for its sting when touched, is a favorite among herbalists
because it is so nutrient-rich, containing vitamins A and C and a great deal of minerals. And the
herb schisandra, which the Chinese revere, seems to be good for just about anything—from helping
the mind focus to making the skin radiant.
So, partaking in a warm cup of herbal tea is both a lovely ritual and a nice way to focus your
senses before a long day of art making.

the minerals,
awakens in
plants, walks in
animals, and
thinks in man.”
