Chapter Overview

The cultural and heritage tourism industry has a wide variety of resources throughout the world. They are managed and protected by both ­public and private agencies. The United States’ National Trust for Historic ­Preservation is responsible for creating criteria for those sites that are on the National Register for Historic Places. The United Nations ­Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) maintains the criteria and selects sites for the world heritage sites.
