Chapter 8Four-Foot Waves Grew to Six

Beneath Nickajack Lock, we turned southwest. The Tennessee River narrows and tips down into Alabama. The river remains pretty but not as stunningly beautiful as the sections within the gorge. We didn’t care. It was cold and we wanted to get moving, so we opened up the engine to head downriver fast.

We spied the occasional lonely heron or eagle on the riverbanks, celebrated it, and kept moving quickly. Soon enough, we reached Goose Pond Marina, a lovely little spot just a few miles from the town of Guntersville. Happy with the day’s progress, we hailed the marina on the VHF to let them know we were near. We promptly got lost and waded into the wrong channel with deep weeds on either side.
