Chapter 21Someone Else with a Bigger Boat

Full of hope and newfound optimism of community, we made our way down the coast. Gone were the huge bites of grueling seventy-mile runs. Rather than gorge ourselves, we nibbled, running slowly three to six hours each day. At this slow pace, we could take in the architecture, the food, and mostly the people.

We maintained the great burgee hunt, making it a regular challenge to find the loopers in a place and have conversations. We talked about places, weather, families, and even took the occasional dabble into politics. This last topic was new to us. At home, politics didn’t have hot-button topics. Politics was a hot-button topic. Sadly, that no-man’s-land grew over time to absorb one thing after another. ...
