Chapter 10. Datapath Synthesis

As stated in Section 2.3.6 of Chapter 2, configurable processors require applications that are large enough to necessitate a complex base architecture. Portions of the application are identified as complex custom instructions using a technique such as the one described in Chapter 7. This chapter discusses the process of synthesizing a datapath that is capable of implementing the functionality of all of the custom instructions. The primary concern of this chapter is to avoid area bloat, the third major limitation of automated extension listed in Section 8.4 of Chapter 8.
