This chapter introduces a series of new pop-up techniques, each designed to open out a basic pop-up form by cutting into and away from a crease. The experienced student of pop-ups will recognize that many of these techniques are not commonly used in conventional Origamic Architecture (OA) structures, where cuts along a crease or to the edge of the card are rarely made, if ever. The effect of these unconventional techniques is to dissolve the ‘greetings card’ aesthetic of OA to create structures which have many large, flat facets suitable for using as the ground for surface graphics.
