One of the challenges I face when working with a new choreographer or artistic director is how much I am allowed to contribute. I would like to say that everyone is always open to artistic input from their collaborators, but I have learned from past experiences that that is not really the case. After all the time I have spent working in dance I find that I no longer just look at pieces in terms of what lighting can do to support the choreographer’s work. I am looking at the piece with a critical eye. This is the first point of contribution that I have to negotiate.
