Tom Peters, the great management thinker and writer, says “Leaders win through logistics. Vision, sure. Strategy, yes. But when you go to war, you need to have both toilet paper and bullets at the right place at the right time. In other words, you must win through superior logistics.” Operations are all about the how of business.
As an entrepreneur accelerating the growth of your business, you’re already focused on understanding your customers’ needs and meeting them. Your operating model is the link between your strategic intent to satisfy these customer needs and the ability of your business to deliver on that intent (See Figure 10.1.). Successful entrepreneurs have a clear approach that aligns all components of operations and supply chain with their strategy.

Operations and supply chain management are never static. Successful entrepreneurs have to continually adjust supply chain elements to reflect changes in product mix, customer preferences, locations, distribution channels, supplier base, and technology developments to name a few. They leave nothing to chance, taking control by analyzing their operations and ensuring that all the links in their supply chain are aligned, making changes as and when needed.
